Week 1:  "Free Time" (Chapter 7)

Task 1:  Am, is, or Are?  Verb + -ing?  The Present Continuous!

Work with your partner to review vocabulary for activities we do in our free time and the grammar form for the present continuous.

  • First game:  Review the basic structure
      • I  am  (verb) + -ing
      • He / she  is  (verb) -ing
      • You / We / They  are  (verb) + -ing

  • Second game:  Am I studying the present continuous?  Yes, I am!
      • Yes, I am (verb) + -ing.    or    Yes, I am.
      • No, I am not (verb) + -ing.   or   No, I am not.

  • Third game:  The present simple and the present continuous are different!

Remember:

We use the present simple tense when we want to talk about fixed habits or routines –things that don’t change–.

We use the present continuous tense to talk about actions that are happening at the present moment but will soon finish.
